What do I do if I notice I have a cracked tooth?

Have you noticed a crack in your tooth? Are you experiencing symptoms of pain on biting and sensitivity to hot and cold? Cracks in teeth can sometimes be challenging to detect because they can either be visible or microscopic (unable to be seen with the naked eye). The cause of cracks in teeth can vary but some examples can be due to grinding or eating hard foods. Cracks are often asymptomatic but can sometimes cause discomfort.

It is important to visit your dentist if you suspect you have a cracked tooth. Early diagnosis can prevent further complications, which not only may require more extensive and expensive treatment but may also result in tooth loss.
Depending on the extent of the crack, treatment can vary from removing the cracked portion of the tooth and restoring the tooth with either a filling or crown, to requiring root canal treatment if the nerve is involved.

Regular dental check ups are therefore crucial in allowing cracks to be identified early and treated.
