Why do I need a crown? It is too expensive so can I just get a filling instead?

Your dentist has suggested that it would be ideal for you to get a crown on your tooth but you are thinking why do I need it? A crown is essentially a “cap” that covers your tooth completely. The main reason why a crown would be ideal is to reduce the risk of fracture of a weakened or heavily filled tooth from all the biting forces in your mouth by holding it together. Other reasons for a crown may also include cosmetic purposes such as changing the colour or shape of a tooth or to fill up a missing space with a bridge.

There are different types of crowns available such as metal and ceramic, and your dentist may suggest an ideal material for your tooth based on an assessment. The material and time spent on making the crown contributes to the high cost compared to a filling, but the advantages of the crown over a filling that must be considered and weighed against the cost. With a crown, it can last much longer than a filling, it is CUSTOM MADE for your tooth and is cemented in place, the cosmetic appearance is more superior and more importantly you can avoid the frequent patch up work or replacement that may otherwise be required with fillings overtime.

At Port Augusta Dental Care, we are able to construct same day crowns with the use of modern technology called CEREC. This involves using a 3D scanner to take a copy of your tooth after it has been shaped in the mouth, which is then sent to a machine to construct the crown. Within a few hours, your crown is then ready to be fitted on your tooth.
