What is gum disease?

Do you have sore gums? Are you gums red in colour? Does your gum bleed when you brush? These are some signs and symptoms of early gum disease called Gingivitis, meaning inflammation of the gums.

This occurs due to the build of deposits on your teeth that have not been removed effectively with brushing and flossing over a short period of time. The good news is that at this stage, the condition is reversible with a visit to the dentist for a thorough clean as well as maintaining excellent oral hygiene at home.

If gingivitis is left as is, depending on your susceptibility and other factors, the disease may progress into a condition called periodontitis, meaning inflammation of the supporting structures that hold your teeth in place. There are many factors that can influence the progression and severity of periodontitis, which include smoking and diabetes. At this stage, more frequent and deeper cleans are required to maintain the condition.

If left untreated, teeth may start to become loose overtime and may eventually require removal.

At Port Augusta Dental Care, we have experienced oral hygienists and oral health therapists who are able to assist you in managing gum disease.
