Is custom mouthguards necessary?

Are you interested in getting a mouthguard for yourself or your child? Any sport where there is a risk to a blow on the teeth will benefit from a mouthguard. These days, mouth guards are readily available at chemists and fitness shops, but what is the difference between the one made at the dentist? Why are they so expensive at the dentist?

Mouthguards sold at retail shops are usually stock standard, meaning that a few sizes are available that are supposedly made to fit all. This is achieved by heating the product before inserting it into the mouth to create a well-fitted mould.  This is usually considered a last minute option when there are no other options. Of course, this is better than nothing, but keep in mind this does not provide the ideal protection, in comparison to a custom mouthguard fabricated at your dentist.

Firstly, the fit will be more superior, as dentists will take moulds of your teeth, to construct your mouthguard, thereby providing comfort so you can just focus on defeating your opponent. Secondly, the material used is flexible which allows any impact to be spread across a wider area. The increased costs of these mouthguards are attributed to the increased time in construction, however it is worth it for the protection it offers.

At Port Augusta Dental Care, we fabricate our mouthguards in-house so it completes in a short period of time. If you are interested in getting a mouthguard made for yourself or your child please call us on (08) 8642 2557 to book an appointment.
